Imported milk a growing treat

Since 1997, the consumption of dairy products in cities in China has increased by about 25 percent each year. Given this accelerating graph, it means a lot of milk over time, in a country as vast as China.

The reason for this increasing drinking habit is a scandal that happened in 2008, where six children died and over 294 000 children were poisoned after drinking powdered milk contaminated with melamine. That didn’t change the demand for milk, however, just the demand of information of the origin of the milk. Chinese consumers have lost nearly all faith in domestic milk production, instead they have been more than willing to buy milk imported from Europe, New Zealand, Australia, and the United States.
